French Oak Chips for wine can be used to add flavour to your homebrew wines and cider and mead.
Oak chips add tannins and flavours and aromas of vanilla and spices like cinnamon and clove. The tannins in the oak can smooth out the tannins in the wine as well as adding a buttery smoothness to the wine.
Working especially well in white and red wines like Chardonnay and Riojas, you can achieve that gorgeous 'oaky' flavour by adding to the wine during the fermentation stage.
The oak chips can be toasted in a dry frying pan over a high heat to scorch the oak which adds extra smoky, roasted flavours and colour to the wine.
Add in the oak with the yeast to give the flavours associated with premium wines that have been fermented in oak barrels, rather than just aged in oak.
During fermentation, the yeast help extract the flavours from the oak and cement the flavours into the wine.
You can use oak chips in beer too. They work amazingly well in stouts and porters especially when toasted as they add extra coffee / mocha notes into the beer.
Oak also works really well in traditional IPA's as these were originally transported in oak barrels from England to India on board ships for the long journey around the tip of South Africa and back up to India.
